196Online for grades K-8 will end June 7, 2023

196Online programming for grades K-8 will end June 7, 2023, and will not continue into the 2023-24 school year.

District 196 is proud of the quality learning experience 196Online has provided students and families since it was established for the 2021-2022 school year with federal COVID-relief funding in response to increased parent demand during the pandemic. Designed as a comprehensive online school with flexible and personalized support, 196Online teachers and staff have worked hard to create a robust and supportive learning environment.

As pandemic conditions have evolved over the past year, enrollment in 196Online has steadily decreased, especially in grades K-8, making it not feasible to continue the full K-12 model going forward. 196Online programming for grades K-8 will end June 7, 2023, and will not continue into the 2023-24 school year.  Please know that we do not take this decision lightly and we recognize that families have enrolled in 196Online the past two years for a variety of reasons.

We are informing you of this decision now to allow you more time to make a decision that is best for your child. Current 196Online families with children in grades 1-7 will be automatically enrolled in their attendance-area school for the 2023-24 school year.  Families interested in exploring other school enrollment options can consider the following:

196Online will continue for the 2023-24 school year for grades 9-12, if there is sufficient enrollment.

  • 9th-11th grade current 196Online high school students will remain enrolled in 196Online and automatically move to the next grade level, unless the family completes an intradistrict student transfer application form to request enrollment at a different high school.
  • 8th grade current 196Online students who plan to continue in 196Online at the high school level must complete and submit an intradistrict student transfer application form to select 196Online for high school. If a form is not submitted, their enrollment will default to their attendance-area high school.

Intradistrict transfer forms should be submitted to the Student Information Office by December 15th for priority action. Forms submitted after December 15th will be processed in the order they are received.  All transfer requests are subject to enrollment capacity.

Thank you for your involvement in 196Online and being part of the District 196 community.
